Welcome To Wyvernians

This website is dedicated to former pupils and staff of the City Of Leicester Boys Grammar School.

The aim of Wyvernians is to perpetuate the memory of The City Of Leicester Boys' Grammar School, also known as City Boys, from its inception on 23/9/1919 up to 1976. After 1976  links with the original grammar school ceased, when it became a co-ed comprehensive and ultimately changed its name to The City of Leicester College.

Up until 2023 we achieved our aim by holding an annual reunion at the former school building in Humberstone Gate (appropriately now owned and operated by Age UK!). The formal reunions were discontinued (due mainly to falling numbers and the age of the organisers!). However the occasional mid week lunch takes place in the Age UK restaurant. We also keep in touch via an e-mailed newsletter (known as Old Wyves' Tales!) and this dedicated web site - as well as our Facebook page..

There is no charge to join Wyvernians, and members are encouraged to contribute items to the newsletter (Old Wyves' Tales). In the past we encouraged members to donate any school memorabilia they may have, and a sizeable collection was amassed. A good selection of the memorabilia was always on display at the reunions (and invariably attracted a great deal of attention). Thus the memory of our old school was kept alive.

From the menu to your left you can explore this site, which hosts a virtual 'Aladdin's cave' of information. From the Memorabilia page where you can look at the everyday work & items from your schooldays, to the Old Boys database where you can search an online directory of past pupils and teachers. You may find an old friend who you have not spoken to in years!

As well as being emailed, our irregular newsletter (including all back copies) can be accessed from this website. It features articles and items of interest (mainly anecdotes. from our schooldays - some people still have amazing recall!).

The School Shop made an occasional appearance on this website. It usually sold items that would rekindle your childhood memories. Over the years the following items have been for sale but are no longer be available:-

  • Cine film produced by members of the school's Film Club, transferred to DVDs. Also CDs containing many school photographs. Supplies of these may now only be available by special order.
  • Neck ties with a Wyvern embossed on it and other clothing items were available for purchase direct from the supplier (while stocks last).
  • An addition  in Nov 2012 - a book containing a comprehensive history of the school, painstakingly researched and written by former pupil Andy Marlow and edited by Mike Ratcliff, another ex-pupil. Sadly the book is now sold out
However even the small number of hardback copies have sold out...

but ...
second hand copies appear occasionally on ebay and other online book sellers

(Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances, the download version of the book has been withdrawn from sale)

We now also have a Facebook page, where photographs are stored from schooldays to reunions and even demolition! You don't usually need to sign up to Facebook to view them. You can visit the page via the link on the left. Once on the Facebook page the best way to view the photos is to click on the Photos tab then click on the Albums tab and choose an album to view.

We hope you enjoy the online experience we have created in memory of our time at the City of Leicester Boys Grammar School.
